"An Old Man"

Oil on canvas

The influence came from an etching by Rembrandt and once it was firmly ingrained in the artist’s mind, a mood was then introduced.

The use of heavy impasto paint in areas of the forehead compliment the thinner areas of glaze, such as in the background and shadows.

This particular subject is a favourite of the artist, and was painted three times in the period of about fifteen years. Each time the artist changed certain aspects within the work, but generally, the mood remained similar.
